Firefighter

The application

Hi! I would like to be a firefighter please.

I already know a lot about stoves. I have checked every stovetop in our house, even though Mommy isn’t very helpful and puts lids on them.

I am also really good at small spaces. One time I went into the oven from the back and came out the drawer! Nobody else in my house has ever done that. Lexie says it was “not allowed.” I think she is just jealous.

I am very fast and I am not scared of anything. Not even the vacuum. Lexie hides from the vacuum.

Can I start tomorrow? I can also start today.

Love,

Tilly

The interview (excerpt)

PanelWhat draws you to firefighting?

TillyThe excitement.

PanelFirefighting can be dangerous. Have you ever been in a risky situation?

TillyI went into an oven from the back and came out the drawer.

PanelWhy?

TillyTo see if I could.

PanelHow would you respond to a fire alarm?

TillyI would get on top of the fridge.

PanelThat is not a recommended procedure.

TIllyI like to be up high.

PanelSpeaking of heights, are you comfortable on a ladder?

TillyI don’t need a ladder. I jump.

PanelThat is also not a recommended procedure.

The response

The Fire Department

Dear Tilly,

Thank you for your interest in the Firefighter position and for taking the time to meet with our panel.

After careful consideration, we regret to inform you that we will not be moving forward with your application. While your enthusiasm and agility were never in question, the role requires candidates to follow established safety procedures. Our panel was concerned by your responses regarding fire alarms, ladders and, in particular, ovens.

We wish you the best in your future endeavours.

Sincerely,
The Fire Department Hiring Committee

The rebuttal

Hi Hiring Committee!

Thank you for my letter! I will save it with my letters from Santa.

I read the part about procedures. I don’t know what those are yet, but I can learn them! I learn things really fast. Like how to open the cupboard.

The fridge is still the best place to be during an alarm though. You can see everything from up there. You should try it.

Also, I did not know the oven was a problem. It was fine. I came out the drawer.

I am going to apply again. I am sitting outside the station right now so I am first in line. Is the fire truck allowed to have a cat in it?

Love,

Tilly
